Athens, GA - The No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs outlasted the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in an epic eight-overtime thriller, 53-50, at Sanford Stadium on Saturday night. With the victory, Georgia secures a berth in the College Football Playoff.
The game was tied at 21-21 at the end of regulation and remained deadlocked through seven overtimes. Georgia took the lead for good in the eighth overtime when Jake Fromm connected with Dominick Blaylock for a 10-yard touchdown.
"It was a tough game, but we never gave up," said Fromm. "We knew we had to win this game to make the playoff, and we found a way to get it done."
Both defenses played outstandingly throughout the game, forcing turnovers and making key stops. Georgia Tech's defense intercepted Fromm three times, while Georgia's defense held the Yellow Jackets to just 351 total yards.
"Our defense played their hearts out tonight," said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. "They made some big plays when we needed them most."
With the victory, Georgia improved to 12-1 on the season. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 7 in the College Football Playoff rankings and are likely to be selected for the playoff when the field is announced on Sunday.
"We're excited about the opportunity to make the playoff," said Smart. "We have a lot of work to do, but we're confident that we can compete for a national championship."
Georgia will now await its opponent for the College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs are expected to be paired with No. 2 Alabama or No. 3 Clemson. The semifinals will be played on December 27th and 28th.
