EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Drew Lock will start at quarterback for the New York Giants in their season opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, coach Brian Daboll announced Wednesday.
The decision comes after Tyrod Taylor suffered a concussion during Saturday's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Rookie Davis Webb was also injured during the game with a thumb injury.
"Drew has had a good camp and played well in the preseason," Daboll said. "We feel confident in his ability to lead our offense."
Backup quarterback Matt DeVito, who was expected to start in Taylor's absence, is ruled out for the season opener with a hamstring injury.
"It's a tough break for Matt," Daboll said. "He's worked hard and was looking forward to starting this game."
Lock, 26, was acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason. He was the Broncos' starting quarterback for the past two seasons but was benched in favor of Russell Wilson in 2022.
"I'm excited for this opportunity," Lock said. "I'm going to do everything I can to help this team win."
Lock is expected to have a strong supporting cast, including running back Saquon Barkley and wide receivers Kenny Golladay and Sterling Shepard.
The Giants will face a tough test in their season opener against the Titans, who have one of the best defenses in the NFL.
"They're a very good defense," Lock said. "We're going to have to be on our game to move the ball against them."
The Giants are hoping that Lock can provide stability and leadership at the quarterback position. If he can play well, the team has the potential to surprise some people this season.
However, if Lock struggles, the Giants could be in for a long year.
