This move comes as a surprise to many, as Jiricek was considered one of the top prospects in the draft. However, the Blue Jackets are in need of immediate help on offense, and Foudy provides that.
"We felt that we needed to add some more offense to our lineup," said Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen. "Foudy is a young, skilled player who we think can contribute right away."
Foudy, 21, had 13 goals and 16 assists in 71 games with the Sabres last season. He is known for his speed and playmaking ability.
"I'm excited to join the Blue Jackets," said Foudy. "I think I can fit in well with this team and help them win."
Jiricek is a highly skilled defenseman who was expected to be a top-pairing player in the NHL. He will now have the opportunity to develop in Buffalo.
"We're thrilled to add David to our organization," said Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams. "He is a special talent who we believe will be a key part of our future."
The Blue Jackets hope that Foudy can help them improve on their 18th-place finish in the Eastern Conference last season. The Sabres, meanwhile, are looking to build a young, competitive team around Jiricek and other recent additions.
