The Cavaliers were unable to establish a consistent running game against the stout Virginia Tech defense. Led by senior defensive end Emmanuel Belmar, the Hokies held Virginia's leading rusher, Perris Jones, to just 53 yards on 17 carries.
Quarterback Brennan Armstrong had a tough day throwing the football, completing just 14 of 34 passes for 150 yards and two interceptions. The Hokies' pass rush put constant pressure on Armstrong, forcing him to make several errant throws.
Virginia Tech's defense once again proved to be a force to be reckoned with. In addition to limiting Virginia's running game, the Hokies also recorded three interceptions and forced a fumble. Defensive back Jermaine Waller had two interceptions, including one that he returned for a touchdown.
Virginia Tech's special teams unit also contributed to the victory. Punter Peter Moore averaged 48 yards per punt, and returner Keshawn King had a 40-yard punt return that set up the Hokies' first touchdown.
The loss extends Virginia's losing streak to four games, their longest since 2019. The Cavaliers are now 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the ACC.
Virginia will have a chance to end their losing streak next Saturday when they host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Hokies will travel to face the No. 19 Pitt Panthers.
